The
Beginning:
Let's go back to our beginnings for a
moment. The genesis of any business requires ingenuity and
commitment. Thanks to my grandparents and my parents, Ohio Envelope
rests on a firm foundation of both.
Ohio
Envelope Manufacturing Company was started in 1936 by my
grandfather, Robert A. Nelson. At that time, envelope manufacturing
was largely a manual operation. He designed and built machinery
which helped make that process more efficient. His innovations were
so effective that one of his original machines was operating in our
plant up until 1996. While we continued to stay on the cutting edge
of technology using high speed equipment and modern business
methods, the endurance of this original machine symbolizes our
continuing dedication to the traditions of ingenuity, quality and
service.

While my grandfather provided the entrepreneurial creativity
to start this company, my father, David R. Gould, used his
salesmanship to help us grow into the thriving business we are
today. He was committed to the idea that service and quality were
the keys to running a healthy business. It is my goal to continue to
provide a high level of service and quality in fulfilling your
custom envelope requirements.
Now let me take you on a tour of our
facility and show you how this is accomplished.

Our Location:
The original location for Ohio Envelope was in the basement of
my grandfather's house in Cleveland, Ohio. Since then, we have grown
into a 37,000 square foot manufacturing facility. Our plant and
executive offices are now conveniently located just a short distance
from Cleveland Hopkins Airport.

Raw Material
Inventory Stock Department:
As we move from order entry to
manufacturing, the first thing we check is the raw material
inventory. Most of our stock is purchased directly from the mill and
sheeted out in our plant where it is stored and ready for your
order. Usually, your envelope order can be produced from the raw
material we have on hand. However, if you have an unusual
requirement, we have numerous paper samples here and established
relationships with many paper mills who can supply the needed
materials on a timely basis.
We can produce envelopes on just about
any kind of paper stock or in any color that you can imagine--- from
16# bond to 150# tag. While not every type of envelope can be
manufactured in every stock, we will assist you in determining what
will be the best combination of envelope style and paper.

Die Cutting
Department:
The next step on our tour brings us to
the die cutting area. Here, the envelopes begin to take shape.
We have over 450 solid dies on hand as
well as an adjustable die set up. Custom dies can be made to fit
your special needs. Our high speed precision cutting equipment can
die cut within 1/64" tolerances. Hand operated cutting
equipment is used for more intricate patterns.
We regularly produce envelopes in a wide
range of sizes. We routinely handle:
- from 3 1/2" x 5" up to #14
commercial
- from 2 1/2" x 4 1/4" up to
10" x 13" booklet
- from 1 11/16" x 2 3/4" up
to 12 1/2" x 16" catalog
- and many other sizes and types of
envelopes
We also have over 150 window dies in
stock, including those for full view windows. Windows can be covered
in either poly film, clear or if recycling is a concern, glassine,
which makes the envelopes totally recyclable.

Printing
Department:
Now we come to the printing area. The
quality of our products is maintained by completing as much of the
process as possible right here. This includes all of the preparation
as well as the actual printing of your order. We have a complete
dark room operation and we produce our own plates. Our high speed printing
equipment can produce up
to 650 envelopes per minute.
The outside of the envelopes can be
printed in two colors on both sides. One color security tint is also
available. Having all of these services under one roof enables us to
turn your print order around in less then one week under most circumstances.
<----
The most recent addition
to the printing department is a W&D model 214 four color
envelope press. This press gives us the capability to print up to
four spot colors or four color process on one side of envelopes
ranging in size from 3" x 4" up to 16-1/2" x
18-1/8". Our customers are now able to achieve the
look that they have always wanted on their envelopes at
a reasonable price.

|
Folding
Department:
The envelopes are completed with
gumming, gluing, and folding. These steps are performed
simultaneously. Envelopes are usually sealed with one of three types
of gum: remoistenable, self-seal, or "peel and seal". Special
features such as clasps, grommets, or strings and buttons are then
added as required.

Overall
Manufacturing Capabilities:
Ohio Envelope's manufacturing
capabilities include not only more common envelope forms such as
commercial, monarch, check, policy, booklet, business reply, and
catalog but also more unusual applications. Among some of the
envelopes we have been called upon to make are an art portfolio style
for storage of art work, a Tyvek envelope with grommets used for
control on automotive repairs, and gift certificate envelopes made
out of cover stock for a department store. We welcome the chance to
demonstrate our ingenuity on your creative problems.
Our state-of-the-art high speed and
other special run equipment can handle small runs as well as large
quantities. With average lead times of about two weeks, and some
small commercial runs available in a few days, customers also call
upon us when they need a rush delivery.
